Edith Knapton was the first winner of the CWY award in 1990. She was recognised for her midwifery work at Carlisle City Maternity. In addition to this, she was also an avid fundraiser for numerous charities, especially those dedicated to Kidney Research. Along side all her other work she was also a keen Cumbrian dialect speaker.
